American Heritage Dictionary

An English dictionary app based on the Fifth Edition

This is an English dictionary for Android built from the Fifth Edition of the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language. The developer, MobiSystems, presents it for school, office and home use. The content is the Fifth Edition text, including its new entries, images and usage guidance.

Looking up meanings, usage notes and quotations

According to the listing, thousands of definitions were revised in fast-moving fields such as astronomy and biology. Thousands of new quotations from classic and contemporary writers show words in context. The usage notes on word history, synonyms and language variation were expanded, which helps when several close words seem to fit.

Geographical entries and maps were also completely updated, per the listing.

Word origins and the root-word appendixes

Etymologies were newly written or revised to reflect recent scholarship. Two appendixes trace many words back to prehistoric roots in Indo-European and Semitic. These suit someone who wants to see how a word developed, not only what it means now.

Full-color images in the reference

The listing gives the count as over 4,000 full-color images, added to the Fifth Edition's reference content. They sit alongside the written entries and are part of what the developer describes as the dictionary's new material.
