What this 2FA authenticator app does
Authenticator is a two-factor authentication app that produces TOTP codes on your phone. When a site asks for a second step at sign-in, you type in the code the app shows for that account. The codes are time-based, so the number changes over time and an old one stops working.
It suits anyone who wants a second sign-in step on email, social, banking or work accounts without relying on text messages. The listing presents it as a general 2FA and MFA tool, so the main use is adding that extra layer to your existing logins.
Adding accounts with QR codes or secret keys
To set up an account, you can scan the QR code that a website shows when you turn on two-factor authentication. If you can't use the camera, you can enter the secret key by hand instead. Either way, the account then appears in the app and starts producing codes.
Backing up keys and moving to a new phone
The app can store your keys in the cloud through its 2FA backup system, and you can make an encrypted backup before you lose a device or switch to a new one. If your phone is lost or damaged, you install the app on the new device and get your keys back from the backup.
The listing says all stored data is encrypted, including the copy kept in Google cloud, so that only you can read it. Losing a phone therefore does not mean losing access to the accounts it protected.
Keeping account data protected
Every key is stored in encrypted form, both on the device and in the cloud copy. The developer describes this as protection against hackers who might reach your accounts through a stolen password alone. The app itself is built around that second layer rather than around any other features.
