What the budget planner covers
Beyond Budget is a budget planner and expense tracker for people who want to plan a monthly budget, watch spending against it, pay down debt and save toward specific goals. It works on Android, and the listing says the same budget also runs on iPhone, iPad and the web.
Every change syncs in real time on one account, so a transaction entered on a phone shows up on a tablet or in a browser without a separate export step. The listing describes this sync as the reason the same budget can be checked from any of those devices.
Building a zero-based monthly budget
The planner follows zero-based budgeting: you allocate what you earn until nothing is left unassigned. Money is split into categories, which can be grouped under headings such as bills, groceries, rent, savings and fun money.
For each category the app shows what remains to spend, both for today and for the rest of the month. A Financial Health score is shown on the main view as a summary of how the budget is working, which the developer presents as an at-a-glance figure.
Logging expenses and income quickly
You can add an expense or income in seconds, or save a template for a transaction you repeat so it does not need to be typed again. Recurring transactions are entered on their due dates, and upcoming bills are scheduled the same way.
These recurring entries feed into the category balances, so the remaining amount in each category reflects bills that have not yet been paid as well as those that have.
Importing bank data and automatic tracking
A bank statement exported as a CSV file can be imported in one go, which saves entering a month of transactions by hand. The import is the route for bringing older or outside records into the budget.
On Android, the app can read bank notifications and SMS messages and turn them into transactions automatically. Entries captured this way are added to the same budget as the ones you enter yourself.
Savings goals and monthly spending reports
Savings goals hold a target amount for something specific, such as a holiday, a new car or an emergency fund, so progress toward each one can be followed alongside the rest of the budget. The listing describes goals and targets as separate features that sit inside the same planner.
Spending reports and charts group your transactions by month to show where the money went. They are the place to review a finished month rather than a tool for entering new spending.
