What BirdNET is for

BirdNET is an Android app for identifying birds by ear. It is built on artificial intelligence and neural networks trained to recognise more than 3,000 of the most common bird species worldwide.

The app suits people who hear birds in a garden, park or walk and want to know what they are. It works from sound, so a bird you cannot see can still be named.

Recording a bird call and checking the result

You record a file with your device's microphone inside the app. BirdNET then checks the recording and reports the bird species it considers probably present in it.

The listing presents this as a way to see whether the identification matches what you heard. Each recording is a self-contained test you can repeat at any time.

Submitting recordings to the research effort

The listing says you can submit your recordings to help collect bird observations. Your sightings add to the data the project gathers.

Submitting is optional, and the listing describes it as part of learning about the birds near you, not as a separate function.

Who runs the project behind the app

BirdNET is a joint project of the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Chemnitz University of Technology. The developer listed on the store page is BirdNET-Team.

Because the work sits with a university lab and a research centre, the app's purpose is framed around conservation bioacoustics, the study of animal sounds for conservation.
