What the app is for
Blackmagic Remote Monitor sends the DaVinci Resolve viewer, the picture Resolve is displaying, out to other devices as a live stream. The developer names directors, producers, editors and colorists as the people it is built for, working on the same picture from different places.
The receiving side is a viewer, not an editing tool. People watching the stream see what the Resolve operator sees, so the app suits review sessions where a remote team needs to look at the same grade or cut at the same time.
Streaming the Resolve viewer to several devices
One Resolve viewer can be streamed to multiple computers, tablets and phones at the same time. The developer describes the output as color-accurate HDR, so viewers see the grade as it is being made rather than a compressed approximation.
The stream uses H.264 or H.265 video at 8 or 10 bit, with low latency. The exact setup comes from DaVinci Resolve Studio, so the encoding choices are made on the Resolve side and the viewing app follows them.
Connecting remote clients with a session password
The sender uses Blackmagic Cloud to create a unique session password and passes it to each client. Clients enter the password to join the stream, so no separate account setup or VPN configuration is described as necessary.
The developer says the connection gets through most firewalls. That matters for a client on an office or home network who would otherwise need a network administrator to open ports.
Remote review for creative teams
Directors, producers and colorists can each watch the same live feed from their own location. The developer presents this as a way for a distributed crew to stay aligned during a grade, without sending files back and forth between them.
Because the stream is live, the people watching see changes as the operator makes them. The app is aimed at sessions where everyone needs the current state of the picture, not a copy exported earlier.
