British Council EnglishScore

What the EnglishScore English test is for

British Council EnglishScore is an English proficiency test with a certificate attached, aimed at people who need to show their English level to an employer. The test runs on a phone, so it can be taken from any location at any time.

The listing presents it as two things in one: a free test you can take for your own benchmark, and a paid certificate you can buy once you want a document to send.

Free level testing: grammar, reading, listening and speaking

The core test covers grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening, and returns results immediately at no cost. The developer describes this as the entry point for finding out where you stand.

A separate speaking test is also available. It assesses pronunciation, fluency and how clearly you communicate, rather than only checking answers from a multiple-choice set.

Writing test with workplace tasks

The EnglishScore Writing Test puts you in simulated scenarios from a digital workplace. It scores grammar, vocabulary, how well you organise text and how you communicate in that setting.

Because the tasks are work-style rather than academic essays, the writing section is oriented toward the job-facing use the certificate is meant for.

Exam preparation and course suggestions

The listing says the app can help you prepare for IELTS, TOEFL and TOEIC. It also offers course recommendations for learning English, though the listing does not describe how those are chosen.

Buying a Professional Certificate for employers

The British Council Professional Certificate is a paid purchase, priced from US$20 according to the developer. It is the document meant to prove your English level to an employer.

The developer says employers around the world accept the certificate and links to a list of them on its website.
