Call Defender - Caller ID is a call screening app for Android. It has two jobs: blocking unwanted spam calls and showing who is calling when the number is not in your contacts. The developer, Gogolook, presents it as a free app with no extra charges for blocking.
The listing points most clearly at people who get a steady stream of spam calls, and at people in Hong Kong who want to know whether a call is from a hospital, school or other organization before picking up. Its caller names cover Hong Kong numbers specifically, while its wider lookup covers a global database.
Blocking is switched on through a setting called Spam Database. Once it is on, calls from numbers in that database are blocked. The listing says the database is supplied by HKJunkCall.
The database is checked every 10 minutes. When a new spam number is added, the update is pushed to the phone. Because the check runs on a fixed schedule, a newly reported number is picked up within the next cycle rather than at an unspecified time.
For Hong Kong numbers, the app shows the name of a public or private organization when one calls. The listing says it covers more than 500,000 Hong Kong numbers, including hospitals and educational institutions.
For other numbers, caller identification draws on a global database that the listing says holds over 700 million numbers. The listing presents this as a way to learn who is calling, so an unknown number may still come with a name.
The listing names several sources for the Hong Kong data: the HKJunkCall Whitelist, community reports, the Internet, websites, and the owners of the numbers themselves. Taken together, these are the basis for the names shown during calls.
The listing states that the app does not upload users' contact books. Contacts stay on the phone, and the app works from the number database rather than from anything the user has saved.
The build we hold is Call Defender - Caller ID 9.5.3.3.0 (APKS split bundle) for Android 10 and up.
