What this chess endgame trainer covers
If you want to get better at the endings that decide close games, Chess Endgame Training is built around that job and nothing else. It is a set of practice positions rather than a game against a fixed opponent, so each session starts from a specific board and asks you to find the right continuation.
The positions are grouped into 8 categories and 129 subcategories, and the listing says there are 3,384 of them in total. The developer describes the range as running from the most elementary endings to the most complex, so a beginner and a stronger player can both find material at their level.
The listing singles out the endings that are hardest to remember, such as two bishops and pawn endings. Those are the ones the app is most clearly aimed at.
Choosing endgame positions by piece type
The positions are organised by the material left on the board. The listing names basics (a queen, a rook, or two rooks), pawns, bishops, knights, rooks and queen as the main groups, with the subcategories sitting under them.
Because each subcategory is a narrow type of ending, you can go straight to the one you keep getting wrong. A person weak on rook endings can stay in that group for a whole session, while someone who only needs bishop endings can skip everything else.
Each type comes with several positions rather than one, so you can return to the same kind of ending and see it from a different starting point.
Playing against Syzygy tablebases or Stockfish
In a position you can play against either Syzygy tablebases or the Stockfish engine. Syzygy is a database of perfect-play results for endings with few pieces left, and Stockfish is a general chess engine. The listing ties the engine opponents to positions with more than seven pieces on the board, which is where a tablebase no longer covers the position.
The engine version is Stockfish 16 NNUE. You can set how deep Stockfish searches and how much time it may use, which lets you make it stronger or quicker to respond. The developer also says the way the app uses Syzygy and Stockfish together has been improved, without saying what changed.
Both opponents suggest the moves they would play, which is what lets you check your own choice against a stronger reply.
Tracking results and reviewing solutions
The app keeps a personal record for each position, so you can see how you have done on every board over time. That record is the main way to measure progress within the trainer.
If you cannot find the answer, the app can solve the position automatically and then let you step through the moves once it is finished. The listing also describes a list of moves that lets you pick any move and continue along a different line from there, which is useful for seeing where a second idea would have gone.
When the position reaches a trivial stage, the app offers to play out the final moves for you. The listing says this carries no penalty. Progress and saved configurations can be stored to Google Drive so they are not lost if you change device or reinstall.
Exploring alternative lines by hand
Manual mode lets you move the opponent's pieces yourself. The developer's purpose for it is to test lines that neither Syzygy nor Stockfish would suggest, which the listing calls the "what if" approach.
The board is the chessground board, and on it you can draw circles and arrows to mark plans or threats. You can capture an image of the board, and copy the position as FEN or the game as PGN to the clipboard, for use in other software.
A button opens the current position in Lichess analysis, so a board you have set up here can be examined with Lichess's own tools.
