What the palette designer is for
Color Palette Designer is a tool for laying out color palettes on screen. It is aimed at designers and artists who want to set a palette's overall character first and then work through the individual colors.
The listing sets it apart through its seasonal color system. The app includes built-in palettes grouped under that system, so you can start from an existing set rather than a blank grid.
Setting a base palette with HSL and HEX
You begin by setting general parameters for the whole palette: lightness, hue and saturation. The app works in the HSL model, so each of these is a single control you can move, not a value you have to compute.
Once a base pattern exists, each color can be adjusted on its own. You can change a color with the HSL sliders or type a HEX code directly, which suits anyone matching a value from a brand guide or another tool.
Editing rows and columns of a grid
The rows and columns edit function works on the palette as a grid. Row lightness and column hue can be changed as groups, so a whole row can be brightened or a whole column shifted in hue without touching each cell.
The grid layout is adjustable too. You can set the field margin, the cell height and the number of rows and columns, which controls how many colors the palette holds and how they are spaced.
Seasonal sample palettes and random starting points
The built-in library holds 138 palettes for the 12 seasonal types, including the spring, summer, autumn and winter types. The listing presents them as inspiration, so they work as a reference or a starting point for your own version.
If you have no direction at all, a random palette generator produces a set of colors to begin from. You can then edit that output with the same parameters and grid controls.
Saving, naming and exporting palettes
Each palette can carry a title and notes that you edit yourself, which helps when keeping several palettes for different projects. Finished palettes can be exported as PNG images.
A palette can also be opened in a full-page color swatch layout, which shows the colors large on screen rather than inside the editing grid.
