Compass & Altimeter for true north and altitude
By Hafiz Rahman
Editor, tools and utilities
- True north corrected for magnetic declination
- Altitude above mean sea level, using the EGM96 geoid
- Coordinates in MGRS, UTM, DD, DMM and DMS
- British National Grid and SwissGrid readouts
- Bearings in degrees, grads, milliradians or gons
- Sunrise and sunset times for your current position
What the compass reports about your position
The app is a compass that reports true north rather than magnetic north, adjusting for the local magnetic declination. It also shows altitude above mean sea level, which is the figure hikers, pilots and surveyors usually need.
Most of the readings are computed from the phone's own sensors, and the listing says they work without a network connection. The one exception is the street address of your location, which needs a data connection.
Taking bearings, angles and levels
Bearings can be shown in degrees, grads, milliradians or gons, so the readings match whatever unit a map or instrument uses. The listing describes several dial styles and colour themes, including a high contrast option for reading in bright light.
A set of dials can measure angles between two points, and the listing says a bubble level is included on the iPhone-style dial.
Coordinate formats and map grid systems
Your latitude and longitude can be displayed as MGRS or UTM grid references, or as decimal degrees, degrees and decimal minutes, or degrees, minutes and seconds. For work in Britain and Switzerland, the app also converts to the British National Grid (OSGB86) and to the SwissGrid systems CH1903, LV95 and MN95.
These formats are the ones used on printed military, survey and hiking maps, so the readout can be matched to a paper map directly.
Altitude reference, sun times and sensor checks
Altitude is calculated against the EGM96 geoid as the reference surface. The app also lists sunrise and sunset times for the current position, which is useful when planning a day outdoors.
For checking the instrument, the app shows the magnetic field strength, which can reveal interference, and a sensor accuracy reading. The listing advises using the compass away from sources of magnetic interference, and notes that magnetic phone cases may reduce its accuracy.
