Secretly record videos & photos with screen off or custom cover image
By Trang Nguyen
Editor, media and streaming
DarkCam is an Android camera app from Try the Colors s.r.o. that records video and captures photos while the phone's screen is black or shows an image of your choice. The listing calls it a hidden camera and presents it for discreet video recording and private photo capture.
The main idea is that the phone looks switched off, locked, or showing something ordinary, while the camera keeps running in the background. Recording and capture happen from inside the app, with the screen state set by the user.
The app can record video with the display dark, so the phone appears idle. The listing describes this as recording in the background without drawing attention.
Recording can use either the front or the rear camera, and switching between them is a single tap.
Photos can be captured while the phone looks locked. The screen can instead show a custom image of the user's choosing, such as a book page, a web page, or a notes screen, so the phone appears to be in ordinary use.
The listing presents the cover image as the main way to make the phone look busy with something else while the camera is active.
Recordings are saved within the app, which the listing says keeps them private. The developer states that saved files can be accessed securely at any time.
The listing does not describe a separate export or sharing option, so the storage and viewing details are as stated in the description.
