What the Dropbox cloud storage app is for
Dropbox is a cloud file storage app. It keeps files from a phone or computer in an online account, so they can be opened from other devices and shared with others. People use it to back up important files, move photos off a phone, and send documents to people outside their own devices.
Its main strengths on the listing are backup, file sharing and document scanning. A free account is the starting point, and the paid Plus plan adds more storage and extra security features.
Backing up phone photos and computer folders
The app can upload photos and pictures from the phone's camera roll to cloud photo storage automatically. Those photos can then be shared from the account or moved to another cloud service.
On a PC or Mac, folders can be synced with Dropbox. The listing describes this as computer backup: files saved in those folders are kept in the account.
Opening files, including offline
The app previews more than 175 file types without needing other software installed for each one. The listing does not name the individual formats.
Files in the account can be opened offline, so a saved file can be read without a connection. This works for files the user has already stored in the account.
Sharing large files and photos by link
Files of any size can be sent by sharing a link. The listing says the recipient does not need a Dropbox account to open it.
The app can also save photos to the cloud or pull them from an existing cloud storage account, so photos can be moved between services.
Scanning documents and recovering old files
The scanner works with a phone camera. It turns documents, receipts, IDs and photos into PDFs, which can be viewed or sent from the app.
Version history lets older versions of a file be restored, and file recovery brings back deleted files. The listing names these as tools for PC or Mac folders that have been synced. Plus adds Dropbox Passwords, which stores and syncs passwords across devices, Dropbox Vault for the most sensitive documents and photos, and Dropbox Rewind, which rolls back a file, folder or whole account for up to 30 days. Plus is a paid plan. The listing says it renews monthly or yearly through Google Play, and auto-renewal can be turned off in Google Play account settings. It also offers a free Plus trial with 2 TB of storage.
