What Duo Mobile is for

Duo Mobile is the phone side of Duo Security's two-factor authentication service. Once a Duo account is protected this way, a second step is needed at sign-in, and this app supplies it. The listing points to people who already sign in to Duo-protected accounts as the main audience.

The app does two things in that second step: it produces passcodes, and it receives push requests that you approve with a tap. Both are covered below.

Login passcodes and push approvals

Duo Mobile generates passcodes that you type in at login as the second factor. The codes are produced on the phone, so the sign-in does not depend on receiving a text message.

For push notifications, a sign-in request appears on the phone and you approve it with one tap. Nothing has to be typed, which is the main difference from entering a passcode by hand.

Managing codes for other services
