DW Learn German

What the DW German app is for

DW Learn German is a German course app from the broadcaster Deutsche Welle. The developer aims it at people starting with no German, learners who already have some, and teachers who need classroom material. It is described as free of charge and works online and on the go.

The courses are mapped to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The developer also lists an alphabet course and language preparation for various jobs.

Finding the right starting level

If you do not know your level, a placement test is offered before you choose a course. Its purpose is to point you to the course that fits your current German.

Courses, exercises and vocabulary practice

Courses run from literacy at the start to exam training at the advanced end. Across them is a set of interactive exercises.

Vocabulary training comes with word explanations, so you see what a term means while you practise it. The developer also lists videos, news and music as part of the content, which adds listening and reading material beyond the exercises.

Grammar, regional studies and job German

Grammar and regional studies are included as separate areas next to the language courses. For people studying German for work, the listing points to language preparation for various jobs.

Teaching materials for German classes

Teachers can use the app's comprehensive materials in their own lessons. The developer says these are free of charge.
