What d払い is and how you start using it

d払い is a cashless payment app from NTT DOCOMO's group company, NTT docomo Financial Group. Its main job is to let you pay in shops from your phone, with the points system built in.

Setup takes about 30 seconds if you hold a docomo line contract: you enter a 4-digit password and the app is ready. People without a docomo line can also use it, but they need a d account first.

Paying in stores with a code on your phone

When you open the app, it displays your own barcode and QR code. At the register you tell the staff you want to pay with d払い, and they scan the code on your screen to complete the payment.

You can also reverse the direction. Tap the read option in the app, scan the QR code the store shows, type in the amount, tap pay, and the staff member checks the completion screen. If you want to use d points, tap the points button before showing your code.

Choosing how payments are funded

A payment can be charged to your monthly docomo phone bill, to your d balance, or to a credit card you have registered in the app. A registered card is what lets you start paying without a docomo line contract.

The listing names these three sources only; it describes no other funding options.

Earning and spending d points

You earn one d point for every 200 yen of spending, tax included. Campaigns can add extra points, and the app has a section for the latest campaign information.

At stores that accept the d point card, you can show that card from the bottom Payment tab to earn points on top of the app's own rewards. Turn on the points setting in the app and the points you hold can be spent on purchases, up to a limit you choose in advance.
