FD VR - Virtual Reality Camera: beta VR photo and video
By Trang Nguyen
Editor, media and streaming
- Takes pictures and video in VR through a Cardboard-style headset
- Works as an add-on to the separate FullDive VR app
- Captures can be viewed later in the FullDive gallery, including photospheres
- Streams YouTube videos in IMAX VR in the full FullDive version
- Still in early beta development
What this beta camera is for
This is the camera piece of FullDive, a VR platform that pairs with a smartphone. It is a beta extension, so it is not the complete FullDive app. Its job is to let you take pictures and video while you are inside the virtual space.
It suits people who already own a Cardboard-style headset and want to record what they see in VR. The listing describes it as early in development, so it is best read as a first version of the camera.
Taking pictures and video in VR
The camera captures both stills and video from inside the VR view. The listing does not describe the controls or the file formats it saves.
Because it runs through a Cardboard-style headset, you take shots while wearing it, with the phone in the headset rather than in your hand.
Viewing captures in the FullDive gallery
The full FullDive app includes a gallery that stores your VR pictures, videos and photospheres and lets you open them inside VR. Captures made with this camera are meant to be viewed there.
Using the gallery depends on the separate full FullDive app, which the listing links from this page.
Other FullDive features in the full app
The full version also includes VR YouTube, which streams standard videos in IMAX VR, and a 3D mode for 3D YouTube videos. A VR browser lets you open sites such as Facebook and Google inside the headset, and a VR market lists VR applications.
There is also a VR social network where you can comment on content and share it with friends. None of these are part of the camera extension itself.
