Finding misplaced Bluetooth earbuds and headphones

Find My Bluetooth Device is an Android app for locating wireless accessories that have been put down somewhere and forgotten. The developer aims it at people who have lost earbuds or headphones and want help searching the room, bag or drawer where the item might be.

It works by picking up Bluetooth signals from nearby devices. The search is physical: the app points you toward a device it detects, and you move around to close in on it.

Scanning and choosing a device from the results

The app runs a Bluetooth scan and shows the devices it finds in a list. You then select the accessory you recognise, so the app follows that one item rather than every device in range.

Scanning and selection are the first steps. Once you have picked an item, the rest of the search depends on the signal readings for that item.

Following signal strength to a lost item

A signal strength indicator updates as you walk around, so you can see whether the selected device is getting closer or further away. The developer describes this as a guide for narrowing down your search.

A separate visual proximity cue, which the listing calls a hot zone indication, is meant to show when you are near the item. It is intended for the last stretch of a search, when the item may be tucked into a bag or behind furniture.

Searching for wearables as well as headphones

The developer says the app also supports compatible Bluetooth wearables, including fitness trackers and smartwatches. The same scan and selection steps apply to these devices, so you can search for a watch or tracker the same way you would a set of earbuds.

Search results depend on which devices are advertising over Bluetooth at the time, so a device that is switched off or out of range will not appear in the list.
