What Follow the Money publishes and who it suits
Follow the Money describes itself as an independent investigative newsroom working in the Netherlands and across Europe. Its reporting follows money through government, business and climate policy, and the listing names corruption, lobbying networks, tax havens and housing or healthcare inequality among its subjects.
The audience it describes is someone who wants to know who benefits from a decision, not only what was decided. Readers who follow European funding or corporate influence are the clearest fit. The developer says each story goes through fact-checking and editorial review before publication.
Reading and listening to investigations
Each investigation can be read as text or heard. Podcasts stream inside the app, and many pieces also come as read-aloud versions, which suits a commute or a walk. Long-form analyses and explanatory pieces sit alongside the investigations in the same reading flow.
Some material is open to everyone. The listing refers to selected open-access journalism that anyone can read without membership. The premium deep dives and long-form analyses are member-only, and the developer states that the newsroom has more than 47,000 paying members.
Following reporters, dossiers and running stories
A single tap follows an author, a dossier or an ongoing story. Once followed, the app sends a notification when a new investigation is published on that subject, so a running story does not need to be checked by hand.
Stories can also be saved for later. Together, following and saving let a reader keep a short list of reporters and threads and return to pieces that are not yet finished reading.
Subjects covered, from European funds to climate and housing
The listing sorts its coverage into five areas. The first is political power and policy in Europe, including how European funds are spent. The second is corporate influence, finance and tax havens. The third is climate change, energy and sustainability, with attention to environmental and social effects of business decisions.
The remaining two areas are housing, healthcare and inequality, and technology, surveillance and digital rights. A reader interested in one of these can follow stories in that area and receive alerts when new reporting appears.
