What GnuCash Pocket is for
GnuCash Pocket is a mobile finance manager for Android that pairs with the desktop version of GnuCash. The developer presents it as a way to track spending away from the computer, with the transactions carried back to the desktop program afterward.
It suits people who already keep their accounts in GnuCash on a computer and want to record purchases from a phone as they happen.
Recording transactions and splitting them
Transactions are entered on the phone and can be split into several pieces, so a single purchase can carry its tax, fees or other compound parts on separate lines. The listing gives taxes and fees as the main examples.
Each transaction is also assigned to an income or expense account type. The developer describes these as the categories for your cash flow.
Account hierarchy and double-entry balancing
Accounts sit in a chart of accounts, where a master account holds detail accounts beneath it. Similar types such as Cash, Bank and Stock can be grouped under one master account such as Assets. An existing account hierarchy from GnuCash desktop can be imported to start from the same structure.
The app uses double-entry bookkeeping: every transaction debits one account and credits another by the same amount. The listing says this keeps income and outflow matched against the total of assets, whether those are bank balances, cash or stock.
Exporting to GnuCash desktop and profit and loss
Recorded transactions can be exported back to desktop GnuCash as CSV, QIF, OFX or XML files. The listing presents this as the route from the phone into the desktop ledger.
When income and expense accounts are used together with double-entry, the developer says they can produce an accurate profit and loss statement.
