Planning hikes, rides and off-road trips

Guru Maps is a route planning and navigation app for hikers, cyclists, drivers and people taking a 4x4, quad or motorcycle off-road. Its core use is offline work: maps, search and turn-by-turn routing are meant to keep running once the data is on the phone.

The developer positions it for travel, hiking, biking and off-roading, and the features split into road navigation, trail and bike planning, and live tracking. Each part is described below.

Offline maps, overlays and online map sources

The base maps are high resolution and built on OpenStreetMap data, and the developer says they are refreshed monthly. Labels can be enlarged for readability. Hillshade, contour lines and slope overlays show relief, and custom GeoJSON layers can be drawn over the base map.

Online sources come preinstalled, including OpenCycleMap, HikeBikeMap, OpenBusMap, CyclOSM, HERE Hybrid satellite and USGS topo and satellite layers. More sources such as OpenTopoMap, ArcGIS, Google Maps and Bing can be added from the developer's own source site. The free version keeps three vector countries or regions on the device, while the PRO subscription removes that cap and is sold monthly, yearly or as a one-time lifetime license.

Turn-by-turn driving, walking and cycling routes

Driving directions are spoken aloud, and alternate routes are offered where they exist. Voice prompts are available in 9 languages. Routes can be calculated for driving, cycling, walking or shortest distance.

For a day with several stops, the route optimization feature, which the developer calls a circuit route planner, orders the stops for you. If you leave the planned line, automatic rerouting brings you back onto it, and that works without a connection.

Off-road and bike route planning

Bike routes can be built for the surface you expect: road, city, touring, mountain, trekking or gravel. Off-road trips in a 4x4, quad, ATV, UTV, SUV, jeep or motorcycle lean on topographic data to steer around trickier terrain. Campsites, fuel stations and other destinations along the way can be found, including offline.

During a trip the trip monitor shows compass heading, speed in mph, km/h or knots, distance, a bearing line and azimuth. The developer says position is taken from several satellites at once.

Recording GPS tracks and searching offline

Live GPS tracking shows your position in real time, and a track keeps recording while the app is in the background. Stats cover current speed, distance, time traveled and altitude. Tracks can be drawn in one of seven solid colors or shaded by altitude or speed. The free version allows 15 pinned places and 15 recorded tracks, and PRO removes those limits.

Search works offline and returns results as you type. It can search several languages at once, and it accepts addresses, object names, categories or coordinates in MGRS, UTM, Plus codes, DMS, decimal degrees and degrees with decimal minutes. Saved places, tracks and routes sync between iOS and Android devices signed in to the same account.
