What Hanzii is for
Hanzii is a Chinese-English dictionary that also covers reading, writing and exam practice. The developer pitches it at beginners, intermediate learners and students preparing for HSK exams. Most of its tools sit under one search screen, so a learner can move from looking up a word to studying its character without switching apps.
Each dictionary entry gives a definition, pinyin pronunciation, synonyms and antonyms. The listing describes the dictionary as covering over 200,000 words, with more than 220,000 example sentences to show them in use.
Looking up Chinese words offline
The dictionary works fully offline, according to the listing, so lookups do not need a connection. This matters for someone reading signs, menus or textbooks away from Wi-Fi or mobile data.
Grammar is covered in the same reference. The listing mentions more than 3,000 grammar structures, presented as explanations of how a sentence pattern is used.
Finding characters by drawing, speaking or scanning
If you do not know how to type a character, you can draw it with a finger or stylus and the app matches your strokes against its characters. Voice input lets you speak a word and look it up. The camera mode runs OCR on images, so Chinese text in a photo can be read and looked up.
These three input methods are aimed at text you meet in daily life, such as a street sign or a menu, rather than only at words from a course.
Learning radicals and stroke order
The app covers the 214 standard radicals, with an illustration for each one. Radicals are the building blocks that many characters share, so learning them helps with recognising new characters.
Writing practice uses stroke-order animations that show the sequence of strokes for a character. A learner can follow the animation and copy the same order by hand.
Grammar checks, flashcards and HSK mock tests
The listing says the app can correct grammar mistakes with AI. It also includes flashcards for memorising vocabulary and HSK mock tests for practising for the exam.
Together, the dictionary, the grammar reference and the test practice let a student check a word, review a pattern and then test themselves on the same material.
