A text-only Gothic novel you play through
Heart of the House is a text-based interactive novel by Nissa Campbell, published by Choice of Games. There are no images or sound effects. The developer says the story runs on your imagination, so the manor exists only as the words you read and the choices you make.
It is long. The developer lists it at 360,000 words, which makes it closer to a full novel than a short game. It is rated 12+ and sits in the Adventure category.
It suits people who like reading-driven games with a horror edge and a lot of branching decisions. If you want visuals, controls or fast action, this is not that kind of game.
The premise: a search for Uncle Kent
You are an orphan who has discovered an ability to communicate with the spirit world and with ghosts. When your uncle Kent vanishes, you set out to learn what happened to him. Your route leads to Darnecroy Manor, where he was last seen.
You are not alone on the way. Your companion Devanand travels with you. The developer describes the House itself as something that can seem to shift around you, so the layout of its halls is part of the mystery.
The story turns on whether you can stop the power that binds the ghosts to the House, or whether you will take that power for yourself.
The people and spirits inside the House
The manor is home to its master, Lord Bastian Reaves, and two servants, Oriana and Loren. Each is part of the House's world, and your dealings with them shape how the story unfolds.
Beyond the household, the House is full of spirits, ghosts and echoes. The developer says there are thousands of them. Your search for Kent means finding and dealing with them as you go.
The story's central questions include whether love can develop in a haunted house, and how you will get out when the House comes for you.
Choosing your character and romances
You pick your character's gender from male, female or non-binary. You also pick their sexual orientation from gay, straight, bi, ace or poly. These choices affect who you can romance and how the story treats you.
Romance is optional. You can pursue steamy, chaste, sweet or provocative romances, or you can skip romance entirely and go it alone.
Because the options cover several identities and levels of intimacy, a single playthrough shows only part of the story.
Deciding how the House ends
You can fight the ancient evil at the centre of the manor, or you can embrace its demonic gifts. Those two paths lead to very different outcomes.
The secrets you uncover can be used for your own benefit, or you can use them to help your friends. The developer also lets you choose whom to save from the horrors the House holds, if anyone.
Some scenes are built around terror, with moments meant to test your fears. The developer notes that for some players there may be no escape from the Heart of the House.
