What the app is for
Hiya: Spam Blocker & Caller ID is a call screening app for people who get a lot of unwanted phone calls. It handles incoming calls from numbers you don't know, identifies the caller where it can, and warns you about scams during a call.
It has four main jobs: screening unknown callers, showing who is calling, blocking spam and robocalls, and flagging scam or AI-voice calls as they happen. Each is described below.
Screening calls and checking unknown numbers
Call Screener picks up calls from unknown numbers and asks the caller why they are calling. If the call looks unwanted, the app can keep it from interrupting you, so you only hear the calls worth answering.
For incoming calls, caller ID and call context show more about who is on the line. You can also search any unknown number to see whether it has been reported as spam, fraud or unwanted before you decide to call back.
Detecting AI voices and scam language on calls
During a call, the app analyzes the audio in real time and alerts you if the caller may be using a digital or AI-generated voice. Scammers use these voices to sound more convincing, so this is the feature aimed at that problem.
It also listens for scam tactics such as urgent payment demands, fake government threats and requests for sensitive information, and warns you while the call is still going. The listing states that no detection system catches every scam or unwanted call, so these warnings are an aid rather than a guarantee.
Blocking spam, robocalls and voicemail spam
Spam, scam and robocall blocking uses Hiya's phone intelligence to stop known unwanted numbers from reaching you. The aim is fewer interruptions from calls you would never want to answer.
The app also works on voicemail. It is meant to reduce spam voicemail and gives you safer ways to handle missed calls, so you can review them without wading through junk.
