What How We Feel is for
How We Feel is an emotion journal made by scientists, designers, engineers and therapists. The developer says it was conceived with Yale University's Center for Emotional Intelligence and draws on the work of Dr Marc Brackett. Its aim is to help people put a name to what they are feeling.
The developer describes it as a nonprofit project supported by donations, and lists the app as free. It suits people who want a daily record of their emotional state and some structure for thinking about it, alongside the basic health data they already track.
Finding the right word for a feeling
The core of the journal is picking a word for how you feel. The developer says the app helps you find the specific term that fits, rather than settling for a general label like good or bad. Over time, a record of those words gives you a history of your emotional state.
This is the part of the app built around emotional vocabulary, which the developer ties to Dr Brackett's research on emotional intelligence.
Logging sleep, exercise and health trends
Alongside mood entries, the app tracks sleep, exercise and other health trends. The developer says this is so you can spot patterns across weeks and months rather than looking at a single day in isolation.
Seeing sleep and activity next to your emotional record is the feature that connects the journal to general wellbeing. The listing does not say how the patterns are calculated, so the trends are only as useful as the data you log.
Strategies for hard feelings in the moment
The app also offers strategies for navigating emotions as they happen, not only a record of them afterwards. The developer presents these as tools to use when a feeling is strong, so you have something concrete to try in that moment.
Because the strategies are meant for in-the-moment use, they sit alongside the journal rather than replacing it.
Where your entries are stored and who sees them
By default, entries are stored on your device. You can choose to send your data to an alternative storage solution instead. The developer says only you can access your data unless you decide to share it with someone else.
Research use is off unless you opt in. If you do, you contribute an anonymized version of your data to studies that the developer says are designed to help more people. Sharing for research is a separate choice you make, not a default.
