What Ingress is and who it suits

Ingress is a game about a covert contest over Exotic Matter, or XM, played by moving through the real world. Players are called Agents and work through the Ingress Scanner, which the developer describes as having been upgraded with XM technology.

It suits people who like walking around their own neighborhood or travelling to new places, and who enjoy team play against a rival group. The game has no set map of its own; the places you visit are the game board.

Collecting resources at real-world sites

The game points you toward public art installations, landmarks and monuments. At these places you use the Ingress Scanner to collect resources.

Because the sites are physical locations, collecting resources means going to them. The listing presents exploring the area around you as the core activity.

Picking a faction and capturing territory

Each player joins either the Enlightened, who aim to evolve humanity and find its destiny through XM, or the Resistance, who aim to stop a hostile takeover of people's minds. Your choice sets which side you are working for.

Territory is taken by linking Portals to one another, which creates Control Fields. Holding Control Fields across the map is how a faction works toward victory.

Coordinating with other agents

Players can plan and communicate with other Agents in their neighborhood and around the world. The listing treats this coordination as part of the game, alongside the field-based play.

Because one faction's control is built from many linked Portals, the strategy and messaging between players is what the game is built around.

• Added a Map screen widget to highlight when a new event campaign is active, and when it ends. This widget can be dismissed by collapsing the Día de Muertos Noise Floor campaign in Dispatch by tapping the up arrow or collapse button.
