Khan Academy Kids is an early learning app for children from age 2 through 2nd grade, published by the Khan Academy nonprofit. The listing says it was developed with the Stanford Graduate School of Education and aligned with Head Start and Common Core standards. It is meant for use at home, in homeschooling, in preschool and elementary classrooms, and on trips.
The listing cites Common Sense Media, Parents' Choice and Children's Technology Review among the groups that recognized it. The content is built around a cast of animal characters led by Kodi the Bear.
Ollo the Elephant handles phonics and letter sounds, and Reya the Red Panda covers storytime and writing. Kindergarten activities in the app include phonics, sight words and writing, and the 1st and 2nd grade lessons focus on reading comprehension and problem-solving.
The listing says the app holds more than 5,000 games and activities across these subjects, so a child can move between letter work and story-based tasks without leaving the app.
Peck the Hummingbird covers numbers and counting, and Sandy the Dingo runs puzzles, memory games and problem-solving tasks. The math content covers counting, addition and shapes, with preschool games aimed at early reasoning skills.
Because the characters split the subjects between them, a child can follow one character for letters and another for numbers, which keeps the two areas separate in the app's structure.
The "Read To Me" option plays read-aloud storybooks in English or Spanish. The non-fiction collection comes from National Geographic and Bellwether Media and covers animals, dinosaurs, science and related topics.
The app also includes videos from Super Simple Songs for dancing and singing along. The listing describes the library as hundreds of books and videos for preschool, kindergarten and early elementary.
Books and games can be downloaded in advance, so the app works without a wifi connection on car trips, in waiting rooms and at home. The listing describes this as the way to use it on the go.
Teacher Tools let educators create assignments, track student progress and plan both small-group and whole-group lessons. The app is free, with no ads or subscriptions, and the listing states it is COPPA-compliant. Khan Academy describes itself as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
The build we hold is Khan Academy Kids 9.0.2 (APKS split bundle) for Android 6.0 and up.
