LK - Ableton & Midi Controller: Touch Remote for Live Sets

By Trang Nguyen

Editor, media and streaming

Clip, track, device and automation control in Ableton Live
Touchscreen pads that show Drum Rack pad names
Arpeggiator and chorder built into the pad grid
128 parameters mapped with a learn function
Ableton Live mode or plain MIDI mode in two modules
Controller only: no sounds are generated in the app

What LK is for and who it suits

LK - Ableton & Midi Controller is a remote control, not an instrument. It produces no sound of its own, and the listing points users to a separate app called DRC for playable sounds. Its job is sending control messages to music software and hardware, with its closest link to Ableton Live.

The app is split into four modules that can be set up independently. It is aimed at electronic musicians who work in Ableton Live and want a touchscreen surface for clips, pads and parameters.

Controlling an Ableton Live session with MATRIX

MATRIX is the module for running a session from a touchscreen. The listing says it reaches almost every part of Ableton Live, including composition, automation, clips, tracks and devices. It is the module to use when the work is arranging and shaping a set rather than playing notes.

Playing drum racks on a touchscreen pad grid

MIDI PADS is a touchscreen pad grid, which the listing describes as an MPC-style layout. The module runs in Ableton Live mode or in plain MIDI mode.

In Ableton Live mode, each pad takes the name of the drum rack sound assigned to it, so the grid shows what each pad triggers. An arpeggiator and a chorder are built in, so one press can start a pattern or a chord.

Mapping hardware parameters with the learn function

MIDI Controller provides 128 parameters that can be assigned to controls. Like MIDI PADS, it works in either MIDI mode or Ableton Live mode.

In Ableton Live mode, the learn function assigns a parameter in two steps: choose assign, then move the parameter in Live. The listing presents this as a replacement for manual MIDI mapping.
