Macau Pass Balance: check a Macau Pass card over NFC

By Priya Raghavan

Senior reviews editor

Balance read by holding the card against the phone's NFC area
No account, registration or internet connection required
Reads the balance only, not encrypted or privacy information
Does not write to or change the balance stored on the card
Unofficial reader, not published by Macau Pass S.A.

What the app is and who it suits

Macau Pass Balance is a small reader for the Macau Pass card. It is published by the developer Erudite, and the listing states plainly that it is not an official app from Macau Pass S.A., which holds the Macau Pass trademark.

It suits anyone who already holds a Macau Pass card and wants to see the remaining balance on an Android phone. The listing describes it as a single-purpose tool, with no other features beyond reading the card.

Reading a card balance with NFC

The app works by near-field communication, so the phone needs NFC. The listing says the app cannot switch NFC on by itself, so NFC must be enabled first in the phone's settings, under the wireless and networks section.

Once NFC is on, the card is tapped to the back of the phone and the balance appears in the app. The listing says this happens without an internet connection, so the check works offline.

What the reader does not access or change

According to the listing, the app does not read encrypted data or privacy information on the card. It only reads the balance figure.

It also does not amend balance data, so tapping a card does not alter what is stored on it. No registration is needed, so there is no account to create before the first read.

Installs and the developer's listing

The Play listing shows more than 10,000 installs. The developer is Erudite, and the app is listed as all ages.

The developer states that it is not responsible for any loss or damage caused by the app, and that the Macau Pass name is a trademark of Macau Pass S.A.
