Maps for planning and getting around
Magic Earth combines map browsing and place search with turn-by-turn navigation. It may suit people who want to look up destinations, save places they return to and follow directions while travelling.
The free tier includes those core map and navigation tools. The listing does not specify whether using them requires an account.
Choose a route and inspect the details
Before a trip, route information can show distance, surface, difficulty and an elevation profile. These details help compare routes, especially when terrain or the kind of path matters.
Map views include 2D, 3D and satellite imagery. Nearby points of interest can link to Wikipedia articles, and the map can show nearby parking places. The developer says map updates are provided free of charge.
Navigation on the road or offline
Turn-by-turn directions are part of the free offering. Traffic-aware navigation is a Premium feature, so that option requires a subscription.
Offline maps also require Premium. The developer says its downloadable maps use OpenStreetMap data and cover 233 countries and regions. Android Auto compatibility is listed for using the app through a car's Android Auto connection.
What the free and paid versions include
Magic Earth uses a freemium model. Map browsing, search, favourites and turn-by-turn navigation are free; Premium adds offline maps, traffic-aware navigation, activity recording and an elevation map style. The listing gives no subscription price.
The developer says the app does not track or profile users and does not trade personal data. The listing does not explain whether ads appear, or give details about what kinds of activity can be recorded.
