What NaturalReader does and who it suits
NaturalReader - Text to Speech turns documents, books and web pages into spoken audio. You pick a file or page, choose a voice and a speed, and the app reads it back. The developer describes it as a listening tool for commutes and other times when a screen is not practical, and also as a reading aid for people with dyslexia or other reading difficulties.
Because it accepts both digital files and photographed pages, it fits anyone whose reading material is on paper as well as on a device.
Reading PDFs, Word files and web articles aloud
The app opens PDF, MS Word (.doc and .docx), MS PowerPoint, Mac documents, RTF, plain TXT, DRM-free EPUB ebooks and cloud documents. It also reads online articles. Its OCR text recognition handles scanned PDFs, so text that is only an image can still be spoken.
Each source is read in the same voice and at the same speed you set, so a long report and a library ebook sound consistent.
Scanning physical pages with the camera
The camera scanner photographs book pages or handwritten notes and converts them to audio. You photograph the pages you want, and the app reads them aloud. Image files in png and jpg format can be loaded the same way.
This suits printed material with no digital copy, such as a library book or class notes.
Voices, speed and display settings
The standard library offers 1000+ AI voices across more than 100 languages and dialects. The developer says its Plus voices are its newest, and they are only available through the Plus Subscription plan.
Other controls include reading speed, a word highlight that follows the voice, a dark mode, closed captions, and a pronunciation editor for unusual words or acronyms. A filter can skip URLs and text inside brackets, which the developer says is useful for web pages and academic papers.
Saving audio and reading across devices
Text can be converted and downloaded as MP3 files, so it can be played outside the app. A free NaturalReader account connects the Mobile App, Online Reader and Chrome Extension, and the developer says you can pick up a document on a phone where you left it on a desktop.
For readers with dyslexia, the developer says presenting text on screen and in audio together lets them focus on content rather than decoding. A dyslexia-friendly font is available for captions and the text box.
