What the NS app is for

NS is the official planning app for the Dutch Railways. It covers the main tasks of a train passenger: working out a journey, checking when trains leave a station, seeing what is disrupted, and finding out what a station has on site.

It suits anyone who travels by Dutch train and wants the operator's own timetable and disruption information on a phone, rather than relying on a general map or route app.

Planning a journey and tracking delays

The journey planner works from live timings, so the routes it suggests reflect the current state of the network rather than a fixed printed timetable. You enter where you are starting and where you are heading and it returns the connections.

A trip you save can be watched for delays. When that trip is held up, the app sends a notification, so you do not have to reopen the planner before leaving home.

Departures, nearby stations and station facilities

Each station has a timetable of departing trains, which shows what is leaving from that platform area next. This is the quickest way to check a connection if you already know the station you are at.

With location switched on, the app shows the stations near you. Station information also lists the facilities and shops at each stop, so you can see what is available before you arrive.

Planned engineering work and disruptions

The app gathers planned work and current disruptions into one summary. Track works and service changes that affect your route appear there, so you can check them before setting off.

Because the summary covers the whole network, it is useful for checking a line you do not use every day, not just the one you normally take.
