OctoStudio is a block-based coding app for children, built for making animations, games and interactive art on a phone, tablet or Chromebook. The developer is the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab, the team behind Scratch, and the listing describes it as made for kids and schools.
Projects are assembled from coding blocks and your own material. You are not writing text code, so the app is aimed at people who are learning to program for the first time.
The main workflow is combining emojis, photos, drawings, sounds and movement in one project, then using coding blocks to set how those pieces behave. The result can be a short animated story, a playable game or an interactive picture.
Because the artwork and sounds come from the user, a project can look and sound like whatever the young maker drew or recorded. The listing does not describe any built-in library of characters or backgrounds.
Games can be steered by tilting the device, and a project can be set to start when the phone is shaken or when a magnet is brought close to it. These are the kinds of inputs that make a project respond to the physical device rather than to taps alone.
Projects can also make the phone speak, make it buzz, or turn the flashlight on and off through coding blocks. The beam block lets separate phones send information to one another, so several devices can take part in the same project.
A finished project can be recorded as a video or as an animated GIF, which is useful for posting a clip outside the app. The project itself can be exported as a file that someone else can open and play.
The listing says projects can be sent to family and friends from the app. The exported file is how a project moves to another device running OctoStudio.
Projects can be created without an internet connection. The app is offered in more than 30 languages.
The listing states that OctoStudio is free, with no ads, no in-app purchases and no data collected.
The build we hold is OctoStudio: Coding for Kids 1.1.2 (APKS split bundle) for Android 8.0 and up.
