PASS beyond certification to everyday life
By Mei-Lin Chua
Contributing editor, apps and storefronts
PASS by SKT is SK Telecom's identity app. It combines identity verification, a digital certificate, a mobile ID and phone payment tools in one place, and it also lists credit, loan, card, insurance and stock information. The developer describes it as a service for SK Telecom customers, and the phone must be registered in the user's own name. Resellers' phones and corporate phones can also be used, with corporate lines registered through a dealer or by calling 114.
The build we hold is PASS by SKT – 인증을 넘어 일상으로 PASS 3.13.20 (APKS split bundle) for Android 8.0 and up.

Most of the app's functions are tied to a phone number and the person who holds it, so it is mainly useful to someone who already has an SK Telecom line and needs to prove who they are online or manage that line's payments and messages.
The identity check can be done by text message or through the PASS app itself, and the app keeps a record of past verifications. The PASS certificate is used to sign in and verify identity at public and private sites, and the developer names Government24 and the National Tax Service's Hometax as examples. A QR code can be scanned with the camera for certificate authentication.
The mobile ID stores a resident registration card or driver's license in the app. The developer says it has the same legal effect as the physical card. Location access is used when the mobile ID is in use.
ID payment lets a user register an ID card and a bank or credit card, then complete adult verification and payment in a single step. Phone payment lists the history of charges, shows available discounts, and lets the user check and change the monthly limit on phone payments.
The same screens also cover the limit on content usage fees billed through the phone bill (DCB), which can be checked and changed from the app.
The developer's fraud service, called one-time safety in the listing, is meant to detect phishing and identity theft before a loss occurs and to cover damage afterward. Spam filtering blocks unwanted texts, lets the user manage a block list, and suggests numbers and keywords to add to it. Contacts access is used for the spam filter and the mobile wallet.
Both tools are optional in the sense that the developer says the app still works without granting the optional access.
PASS wallet stores government electronic documents and various certificates, sends alerts from the citizen secretary service, and lets one person issue a certificate to another. Smart ticket checks a domestic airline ticket and an ID together at airport entry. The pet registration certificate shows an animal's registration number, name, sex, breed and neutering status.
Financial benefits list loan, card, insurance and investment products with their offers. The developer also describes credit and stock investment information in the same app.
