Penguin Rescue: 2 Player Co-op puts two penguin brothers on dangerous icy floes. Neither penguin can swim or climb, so the player has to get them across by jumping, walking and helping each other. The two penguins are tied together by a single rope, and the rescue only counts when both reach safety.
The developer pitches it as a lighthearted co-op game for friends, siblings, couples and party play. It is built around two people sharing one screen or one rope rather than around a single character.
You can play alone, play local two-player co-op with a friend on the same phone or tablet, or play online with other people. The controls are limited to jumping and moving, which keeps the input the same whichever mode you pick.
Local play is the main way the game is meant to be shared, with both players working the same screen. Online play connects you with other players instead of a partner beside you.
The rope is the central mechanic. You use it to pull your partner, to keep your balance and to help each other over gaps in the ice. Because the penguins are linked, one player's position affects how the other can move.
Jumps have to be timed to cross the floes. Each run ends with both penguins rescued together, so a mistake by either brother affects the pair.
Fish bread is collected while you cross the floes, and it is used to unlock rewards. The rewards are cosmetic: you dress the penguins in hats, accessories, pants and outfits.
Because the outfits are unlocked with fish bread, collecting it on each run is the way to change how the two penguins look over time.
