Design and optimize solar plants. Essential tools for photovoltaics.

Photovoltaic Calculations is a set of solar plant calculators for people who design or install photovoltaic systems. It also includes reference material for students and enthusiasts who want to understand how the numbers fit together. The listing presents it as a tool for planning a plant from the panel level up to the array.
The calculators handle panel yield, cable and protection sizing, string currents, inverter choice and layout. Each one works on its own, so you can run a single check or step through a full design.
The app calculates DC cable ampacity and the cross-section needed for a given run. It also sizes protective devices and states the surge protection device (SPD) requirements. These steps are often checked by hand against tables, so having them in one place is the main draw here.
String sizing works out how many panels go in series per string. The app also estimates short-circuit currents, which feed into the choice of protection for each string.
Yield calculations start with the sun. The app works out the sun's position, the optimal tilt angle for a panel, and irradiance on a tilted surface. It also estimates the number of daylight hours across the year, which feeds into the energy estimate.
Module behaviour is handled through the air mass index, the fill factor, the solar cell temperature and the effect of temperature on the module. The integrated compass, inclination and altitude tools help you take site measurements that go into these calculations.
For layout, the app gives the occupied surface area and the spacing needed between module rows. It also selects an ideal inverter for the design.
Output is projected over time, with a calculation for panel decay across the years. This lets you see how the plant's yield changes as the modules age.
The resources section covers series and parallel panel connections, along with the basic terms module, string and photovoltaic array. These are useful for checking a layout before running the calculators.
It also sets out the astronomical parameters used in sun-position work: solar zenith, solar azimuth and solar declination. Each is shown alongside the calculators that use it.
The build we hold is Photovoltaic Calculations 3.1.1 (APKS split bundle) for Android 10 and up.
