Editor, tools and utilities
- Ready-made experiments that start with one tap
- Readings from accelerometer, magnetometer, GPS and LiDAR
- Export raw data and results as CSV, TSV or Excel
- Control a running experiment from a PC browser on the same network
- Build your own experiments in a web editor at phyphox.org
- Fourier transforms and cross-correlation in the analysis toolbox
What the phyphox app measures and who uses it
phyphox reads the sensors built into an Android phone and presents them as physics measurements. The listing's examples include using the phone as a pendulum to estimate local gravitational acceleration, and using its sound input as a sonar. It is aimed at students, teachers and anyone who wants to test physics with a phone.
The app was developed at the 2nd Institute of Physics A at RWTH Aachen University. It works with a set of named sensors, listed below, though not every phone has all of them.
Running ready-made physics experiments
A selection of pre-defined experiments is included. Each one is opened and started from the app without setup, and the analysis runs as the data comes in.
The sensors the listing names are the accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, light intensity, pressure, microphone, proximity sensor, GPS, camera and LiDAR or time-of-flight sensor. Which of these an experiment can use depends on what the phone contains.
Exporting sensor data for analysis elsewhere
Each experiment can export the raw sensor data together with the computed results. The files are CSV (comma-separated), TSV (tab-separated) and Excel, so they open in spreadsheet and statistics software. The developer asks users to request any other format they need.
Exporting raw data alongside the results means the same recording can be checked or reanalysed in another program.
Controlling experiments from a computer
A running experiment can be controlled from a web interface on any PC that is on the same network as the phone. The PC needs only a modern web browser; no software is installed on it.
This lets one person operate the phone at a bench while another watches the readings on a larger screen.
Building and sharing custom experiments
Custom experiments are designed in a web editor at phyphox.org. You choose the sensor inputs, define the analysis steps and lay out the views that the phone displays.
Analysis can be as simple as adding two values, or use Fourier transforms and cross-correlation from the toolbox of analysis functions. Finished experiments can be shared with colleagues, students and friends.
