What Piano Academy is for and who it suits

Piano Academy is aimed at two kinds of learner. The first starts with no piano knowledge at all. The second already reads a little and wants to keep improving by playing along with songs they know. The developer, Yokee, lists the audience as everyone from kids to adults.

The app opens on an on-screen touch keyboard, so you can press keys right away without any extra equipment. Beyond that, it can connect to a MIDI device or detect the notes played on an acoustic or electronic piano. Most of what it offers is built around that loop of watching a lesson, reading the music and playing it back.

The developer describes the app as designed from the start to take complete beginners toward playing real pieces.

Playing on a touch keyboard, MIDI or your own piano

The touch keyboard is the quickest way in. It needs nothing beyond the phone or tablet itself, so you can work through lessons before you own a piano or a controller.

For a hardware keyboard, the app supports MIDI connection. The developer also says it can detect the notes you play on an acoustic or electronic piano, so the practice feedback works with the instrument you already have.

Both routes feed the same lessons and games, so you do not need a separate version of the app for each way of playing.

Theory lessons with instructor videos and animations

The theory side is delivered as tutorial videos. A private instructor introduces each topic, and the listing names notes, the staff and chords among the subjects, with more beyond those.

Lessons use animations and walk-through videos to show what is happening on the keyboard and the page. The developer says the early material teaches you to read notes, so that later you can play from sheet music.

As you move on, the lessons cover playing with both hands and playing chords.

Reading sheet music and playing classical and pop songs

The staff player shows notes the way they appear on real sheet music. The notes are timed to a background track that plays under them, so you read ahead and play along with the music rather than stopping to work things out.

The song selection covers classical pieces and contemporary hit songs. The developer presents this as the main way to practice once the reading basics are in place, which suits someone who wants to play music they already like.

Because the staff player and the note detection run together, you see the notes you are meant to play and the app tracks what you actually play against them.

Note-by-note feedback and games for ear, hands and rhythm

The app listens to every note you play and gives instant feedback. The listing says this is meant to show whether you hit the correct note at the right time, so you can see where to adjust.

The games are a separate part of the practice. The developer lists them as training for musical hearing, hand coordination and a sense of rhythm, along with other skills.

The feedback and games are meant to be used together with the lessons and the staff player, so that reading, timing and listening are practiced side by side.
