What Pioneer ARC is for

Pioneer ARC is a remote control app for Pioneer car stereos. It runs on an Android phone and turns the phone's screen into a touchscreen controller for the head unit. It is aimed at owners of the compatible models listed by the developer who would rather control the stereo from their phone than from its buttons.

The developer says the set of available controls depends on the model. A given head unit may not offer every function described.

Browsing music and switching audio sources

The app lets you browse your music from the phone and pick what the stereo plays. Source switching covers the FM tuner, Bluetooth audio and the other inputs the head unit supports. You change the source from the phone instead of cycling through the unit's own menu.

On some models the same screen also handles Bluetooth management, so pairing and connection settings for the stereo can be handled from the phone.

Audio and illumination settings

Pioneer ARC gives access to the audio settings of the Pioneer system, so sound adjustments can be made from the phone. It also changes the illumination colors of the unit, which the developer lists as one of its customization options.

Which of these settings appear depends on the head unit. The developer lists separate groups of compatible models for source control, audio settings, illumination and Bluetooth management, and not every group covers all four.

Launching apps and connecting over USB

The app can start third-party apps from the remote, so a navigation or music app on the phone can be opened from the stereo's controls. The developer lists this as a separate function from the stereo controls.

For USB connections, the developer describes support for Android Open Accessory (AOA) 2.0. It states that the result depends on the phone, and that some Android devices connected this way may not work properly or may produce sounds because of their own software.
