PlayNest: MP3 Music for Everyday Offline Listening
By Trang Nguyen
Editor, media and streaming
PlayNest is an offline music player for Android that works only with audio stored on the device. The developer positions it for times when a data connection is unreliable or unavailable, such as commutes, flights, gym sessions and study breaks. It does not include online music sources or a streaming catalogue, so it suits people who already keep their own MP3 files.
The listing states that the app is built around music the user owns or can access on the device. It does not find or download songs on its own.
The build we hold is PlayNest: MP3 Music 1.0.2 (XAPK bundle) for Android 8.0 and up.

PlayNest imports songs that are accessible from the phone, so tracks from different places can be played from one app. Besides MP3, the listing names other supported local audio formats. Playback depends on the file format, codec support and whether the file is intact.
Songs can be browsed as a track list, by folder, by playlist, by album or by artist. The album and artist views depend on the file having metadata. Folder browsing lets you open a collection you already keep without scrolling through unrelated files.
Playlists are made by hand from songs already in the library. The developer suggests separate lists for morning routines, focus time, exercise, travel and quiet evenings. A playlist is a fixed set of tracks you choose, so the same songs come back each time you open it.
The playlist feature is the main way to pick a set of songs ahead of time, for example before leaving somewhere with no signal.
Playback continues when the screen is off or when you switch to another app. Controls appear in the notification shade and on the lock screen, so you can pause, resume, skip or stop without unlocking the phone or returning to PlayNest.
Because playback runs in the background, a song or playlist can keep going during a walk or a bus ride while the phone stays in a pocket.
