Portable WiFi - Mobile Hotspot

What this hotspot app is for

Portable WiFi - Mobile Hotspot is an Android app that uses a phone's mobile data connection as a Wi-Fi hotspot, so laptops, tablets and other phones can get online through it. The listing presents it as a free hotspot tool for sharing a connection with friends, family or your own other devices.

It is aimed at people who need a quick way to put a phone's connection to use elsewhere, such as when a laptop has no network of its own. The developer states that it works without root access, so the phone does not need to be modified.

Starting a Wi-Fi hotspot from an Android phone

The main job of the app is to switch the phone into hotspot mode. The listing describes this as a short setup of a few steps, after which the phone can be used as a mobile hotspot at any time.

Because it is a hotspot tool first, the other features all work on top of the same connection. Once the hotspot is on, the phone is the access point the other devices join.

Monitoring data use and hotspot speed

The app can track how much internet data the hotspot is using, which helps when a mobile data plan has a limit. It also includes a speed check for the hotspot connection, so you can see how fast the shared link is running.

These two tools are separate from the hotspot itself. They show what is being used and how well the connection performs while other devices are connected.

Setting a timer on the hotspot

A timer can be set on the hotspot, so it runs for a chosen period. This suits cases where the connection should only be shared for a limited time, such as a single meeting or a trip.
