Proton Mail is the encrypted email app trusted by over 100 million people.
By Kelvin Ooi
Security and privacy editor
Proton Mail is an email client built around encryption. The listing says messages are protected by end-to-end encryption, and that the company is based in Switzerland. It also states that there are no ads, no AI training on mail, and no scanning of the inbox.
The build we hold is Proton Mail: Encrypted Email 7.11.10 (APK) for Android 10 and up.

It suits people who want a private address for everyday mail, or who want to keep work and personal accounts apart in one place. Anyone who signs up gets a free @proton.me or @protonmail.com address.
Messages to other Proton users are encrypted automatically. Messages to people on other email services can be sent as password-protected emails, so the recipient needs the password to open them. The listing presents this as working for people who do not use Proton at all.
The app is useful for sending sensitive details, such as account information or contracts, to someone outside the Proton system.
Built-in spam filters sit in front of the inbox. The listing adds phishing alerts, which flag suspicious messages, and blocking for email trackers, the hidden images and links that tell a sender when a message has been opened.
These protections run as part of the mail service itself, so there is nothing separate to install or configure.
Folders and labels both sort mail, and swipe gestures let you act on a message without opening it. Private categories group incoming mail into sections such as important messages, which the app assigns automatically on the device.
Labels can sit on one message at once, while a folder holds it in one place. Choose whichever suits how you file mail.
Offline mode lets you read, write and organize messages without a connection. Changes made offline sync to the account when the device goes back online.
You can add several Proton Mail accounts and switch between them inside the same app, without signing out of one to use another.
Free accounts get up to 1 GB of email storage. The listing says the limit rises to 15 GB with Mail Plus, which is the upgrade the listing names for more space.
Storage limits decide how much mail and attachments an account can keep, so anyone who archives a lot of mail will reach the free limit sooner.
