A QR code reader and generator for Android

QR Scanner is an Android app for reading QR codes and barcodes, and for making QR codes of your own. The developer, P & L Studio, describes it as a scanner, a generator and a log of both. It suits anyone who often needs to read a code, from opening a link on a poster to joining a Wi-Fi network from a sticker.

The app is built around the camera. The listing says you open it, point the camera at a code and it is recognized without any button presses or zoom adjustment.

Scanning QR codes and what they can contain

The scanner reads all common QR code formats. The listing names URLs, plain text, contact details and Wi-Fi credentials among the content it handles, and says it works with more than these.

Because it reads Wi-Fi and contact content as well as links, a single scan can be used to join a network or save a person's details, not only to open a web page.

Product barcodes and passport machine-readable zones

Product barcodes are scanned to show item details. If a barcode is damaged and will not read, the numbers printed beneath it can be typed in by hand.

A separate ID and passport feature reads the machine-readable zone on identity documents and passports. It pulls out the key fields so you do not have to type them in yourself.

Making QR codes from your own text or links

Enter your own text, a link or other data and the app generates a QR code straight away. The listing says the result can then be saved or shared.

This is the reverse of scanning: the same app that reads a code can produce one for someone else to scan.

Going back through your scan and creation history

Every code you scan or create is logged automatically. The history keeps each item so you can reopen it later, which matters for a code you saw a while ago and did not save at the time.
