What Regula Document Reader is for
Regula Document Reader is an identity document reader. It recognizes the type of a document, then reads and checks the data printed on it or stored in it. The listing describes it as working offline, with processing done on the device.
It is built for reading the details on ID documents, so it suits anyone whose task involves checking what is on a passport, ID card, visa or similar paper. The listing names both travel documents with a machine readable zone and documents without one.
Scanning an ID with the phone camera
You can photograph a document with the device camera or pick an image already saved in the gallery. The listing says the app detects the document, crops it and then recognizes it, so you do not need to crop the image yourself.
The listing asks that the whole document sit inside the frame. It also advises more light while avoiding glare and shadow on the page, since both affect the reading.
Reading MRZ, RFID chip and barcode data
For ICAO 9303 travel documents, the app reads the machine readable zone, the lines of text printed at the bottom of a passport, visa or ID card. The listing also says it reads RFID chip data and barcode data where the document carries them.
Each of these sources is read and parsed into fields, so the holder's details come out as structured data rather than a block of text.
Reading licences and permits without an MRZ
Documents that are not machine readable are also covered. The listing names driver's licenses, vehicle registration certificates and work permits as examples.
For these, the app uses OCR to read the printed text and extracts both text fields and graphic fields, then parses and verifies them automatically.
