What Retro Music Player is for
Retro Music Player is a music player for Android that works only with audio files already stored on the device. The developer states it is offline and local: it does not download music or stream it from an online service.
It suits someone who already has an MP3 collection on their phone and wants a player with a simple layout, a choice of looks and controls for listening in the car or before sleep. The listing gives no account or subscription requirement for its features.
Playing and browsing your local music
You can browse by songs, albums, artists, playlists, genres or the folders the music sits in, and play a whole folder directly. Gapless playback is listed, so tracks run into each other without a gap. Volume controls are included.
Playback works with headsets and Bluetooth devices, and lock screen controls let you pause or skip without unlocking the phone. Home screen widgets put playback controls on the launcher.
Themes and the look of the player
The three base themes are a clear white, a dark grey and a pure black for AMOLED displays. An accent colour can be picked from a palette and applied across the interface.
The now playing screen has more than ten themes, and the album cover can be shown in a carousel that slides between covers. The developer describes the navigation as having no overloaded menus.
Playlists, the queue and the home screen
Playlists can be created, edited and imported, and tracks can be dragged into order. The play queue can be reordered in the same way.
Smart auto playlists are generated from recently played, top played and history, so the lists update on their own. The home screen shows your recently and most played artists, albums and favourite songs.
Lyrics, tags, driving and sleep
The lyrics screen downloads lyrics and syncs them with the song as it plays. A tag editor lets you change the information stored on your own audio files. A music duration filter hides tracks shorter than a length you set.
Drive mode and a sleep timer are included. The interface is offered in 30 languages, and a user profile can be set up inside the app.
