State-of-the-art engine sound application, simulating a huge range of engines.
RevHeadz Engine Sounds: simulated car and bike engine audio
By Trang Nguyen
Editor, media and streaming
- Engine sounds from off-road vehicles up to Grand Prix cars
- Gear shifts, brakes and throttle steer the engine audio
- Speed, tachometer, drive ratios and engine load shape the sound
- Backfire effects triggered by the engine model
- OBD-II mode plays the engine RPM from your own car
What RevHeadz Engine Sounds covers
RevHeadz Engine Sounds is an Android app that generates engine audio for a wide range of cars and motorcycles. The developer says the range runs from off-road machines to Grand Prix racers, with road vehicles in between. It suits anyone who wants to hear a particular engine without owning the vehicle, or who wants engine noise playing in a room or a car rather than from a phone speaker.
The sounds are built from models of real engines. The developer describes them as using real-world mechanical parameters, which the app then drives from your inputs.
Controlling the engine sound by hand
You operate the engine with gear shifts, the brake and the accelerator, much as you would in a vehicle. Changing gear, braking and accelerating each change the sound the way a real drivetrain would.
The model also tracks speedometer and tachometer readings, drive ratios, drive lash (the slack in the drivetrain), engine load and backfire logic. Together these determine how the note rises, drops and crackles as you drive it.
Playing engine audio through a sound system
The developer recommends connecting your device to a home stereo or a car sound system to get the full range of the sounds. The app's output is meant to be heard through speakers, not only through the phone.
This makes it usable as a background or showpiece sound in a room, or as the audio for a car's own speakers.
Using your own car's engine data over OBD-II
The app can also run on engine data from your own car through OBD-II (On-Board Diagnostics). This needs an OBD-II compliant vehicle that reports engine RPM, plus an ELM or OBD Wi-Fi or Bluetooth adapter plugged into the car. The adapter is separate hardware and is not included with the app.
The developer links setup and troubleshooting instructions for this mode on its website.
