What Revolut is for and who it suits
Revolut is a banking app built around everyday spending. It handles card payments, money held in several currencies, and sending money to other people. The developer says more than 80 million customers use it.
The listing also says it can send money to people nearby or overseas. It is aimed at people who spend or pay abroad, want their cards and spending in one place, or want to set up an account for a child under 18.
Paying with virtual and physical cards
You can pay with a physical card, a virtual card, or a single-use virtual card. The single-use option is described as an extra layer of protection for a payment. Google Pay and Apple Pay are also supported.
Physical cards can be designed in the app, and fees may apply to a custom design. Metal and Ultra are paid upgrades. Ultra comes with a platinum-plated card, and paid plan terms and subscription fees apply to both upgrades.
Spending in foreign currencies
The app lets you spend abroad in other currencies. The developer lists exchange rates as a selling point. Fair-usage and weekend markups may apply to foreign exchange.
This is the part of the app to read the fee terms for if you spend in other currencies often, since the markups are the listed cost of that spending.
Tracking spending and linking other bank accounts
The app records your spending so you can review and analyse it. You can also link external bank accounts, so their transactions appear alongside your Revolut spending.
Keeping all of it in one app is the stated purpose. The listing does not describe other tracking tools beyond these.
Accounts and cards for children under 18
Parents can open a free Revolut account for a child under 18. The child gets a card of their own. The developer describes this as a way for children to learn about money.
The account is set up as a separate account from the adult's, with its own card, so a child can spend and pay independently within it.
