Roku Remote (Official) is Roku’s official control app for Roku streaming players and Roku TVs. It lets you operate common TV functions from your phone instead of a physical remote.
It’s a good fit if you misplaced the remote, want faster search with your phone keyboard, or prefer private headphone audio while watching. The app also covers adding and launching apps on your Roku device.
The app provides remote-style controls on your phone, with the same kind of button layout as a Roku remote. You use it to navigate menus and control what’s playing on your Roku device.
For some actions, the listing says you must connect your phone or tablet to the same wireless network as your Roku device. In addition, some features require a compatible Roku device and may ask you to sign into your Roku account.
Instead of using the on-screen grid, the app uses your phone’s keyboard so you can type search terms, passwords, and Wi‑Fi information. That can be useful when you want fewer keystrokes or you’d rather type on glass than tap tiny characters.
It also supports voice search. The listing specifies languages and locations: English voice search is available in the US, UK, and Canada, and Spanish voice search is available in Mexico and the US.
The app includes private listening. You connect headphones to your phone so you can stream audio without turning on shared TV speakers, based on the listing.
It also lets you cast photos and video from your phone to the big screen. If you expect to use remote control, voice search, and casting, plan to have your phone connected to the same wireless network as your Roku device, per the listing’s notes.
The listing describes the app as free, but it notes that some Roku experience elements can require payment and can change depending on country. It also says channel availability can vary by location.
It also calls out limits for certain built-in content: the Roku Channel can be viewed in the mobile app in the US and Mexico only. Some features require you to sign into your Roku account, and the app’s feature availability depends on using a compatible Roku device.
