What ScanMaster does with an ELM327 adapter
ScanMaster turns an Android phone or tablet into a vehicle diagnostic display when paired with an ELM327-type interface. The adapter plugs into the car's OBD-2 port and talks to the app, which follows the OBD-2 and EOBD standards.
The app suits people who want to check their car's data on a phone or tablet and already own a compatible adapter, or are willing to buy one. The listing links the developer's shops for the interfaces.
Connecting to supported OBD-2 adapters
The listing names seven interfaces: UniCarScan UCSI-2000 and UCSI-2100, APOS BT OBD 327, OBDLink MX and MX+, OBDLink LX, and Bluetooth and WiFi versions of the OBDLink, generic ELM327 and Pearl Lescars adapters. Some of these connect over Bluetooth, others over WiFi, depending on the model.
Because the interface is separate hardware, the app depends on one of these adapters being present. The app itself does not read the car without one.
Reading OBD-2 parameters and error codes
The core OBD-2 functions are available without restriction in the Lite version. The Lite version limits how many parameters and error codes it will show, compared with the Pro version.
The Pro version offers more features and is bought as an in-app purchase through Google's In-App Billing. The Pro unlock covers the full set of parameters and error codes rather than the Lite subset.
Charts and pausing recorded data
Measured values are shown as graphs. A pause mode freezes the recording so the data can be examined.
In pause mode, the recorded data can be scrolled and zoomed by touch gestures, so a particular stretch of a graph can be inspected more closely.
