Play ProtectWith ScratchJr, young children (ages 5+) can learn to code -- and code to learn!
By Irfan Rosli
News editor
ScratchJr is a programming app for young children, starting at age 5, that lets them make their own interactive stories and games. It is an introductory language, so the coding is done by snapping graphical blocks together rather than typing text. The listing gives it a PEGI 3 content rating.
Each block carries one action, and a child joins blocks into a sequence that makes a character move, jump, dance or sing. The arranging happens on screen, so the child builds the logic by placing and connecting blocks. These sequences are what turn a drawing into a story or a simple game.
The paint editor lets a child change how a character looks. Children can also add their own voices and sounds, so a character can speak or sing in a recorded voice. Photos of the child can be inserted, which puts the child's own face into the project.
ScratchJr is based on the Scratch programming language, which the listing says is used by millions of young people aged 8 and up. The developer redesigned the interface and the language for younger children and says the features were chosen to match young children's cognitive, personal, social and emotional development. The developer describes coding as a new kind of literacy, comparable to writing, and says it should be open to everyone.
The build we hold is ScratchJr 1.5.11 (APKS split bundle) for Android 5.0 and up.
