What Stop Motion Studio is for

Stop Motion Studio is an Android app for making stop-motion films. You capture still frames with the phone camera, arrange them into a sequence, and then add titles, music and effects. The developer pitches it at people who want to make animated shorts, including the kind of clay or Lego films common on YouTube.

The app is built around frame-by-frame work. Most of its tools are for shooting, reviewing and rearranging individual frames, and the movie-level tools such as soundtrack, titles and filters are layered on top of that.

Capturing frames with camera control

Capture runs on an adjustable time interval, so the app can take frames at a set spacing instead of waiting for a tap each time. Automatic or manual control is available for white balance, focus, exposure, ISO and shutter speed, which keeps lighting consistent from one frame to the next.

A second device can act as a remote camera. That lets you place one phone above the set and control the shoot from another, rather than touching the rig between frames.

Reviewing and rearranging frames on a timeline

Overlay mode shows the difference between the current frame and those around it, which helps with small movements. Animation guides add gridlines, a marker or a movement path so a figure can be positioned the same way across frames.

Frames can be copied, pasted, cut or inserted at any position in the sequence. The interactive timeline keeps the whole project visible, even when it runs to hundreds of frames. Merging frames simulates fast movement, and a connected keyboard can drive shortcuts for faster editing.

Adding titles, effects, sound and green screen

Titles, credits and text cards come from a built-in library or from the built-in editor. Video filters, foregrounds, backgrounds, aspect ratios and fade effects change the overall look. Rotoscoping imports a video clip and lets you draw over it frame by frame, and green screen replaces the background behind captured figures.

The soundtrack can use built-in music and sound effects, songs from your music library, or your own narration. Photos from your library can be imported into a movie. Some features require in-app purchases, and all features are included in the Pro version.

Image editing, export and learning resources

A layer-based image editor handles text, speech bubbles, facial expressions, touch-ups, sketching and painting. An eraser removes unwanted objects from a frame. Finished movies can be saved to the photo library, shared to YouTube in 4K or 1080p, or saved as an animated GIF, and every individual image can be exported for work in another program.

Projects can move between an Android device and a desktop computer through Dropbox or Google Drive, so work started on a phone can continue on a computer. Tutorial videos, a written manual and a set of animation tips are included for learning the techniques.
